A California man was arrested Thursday in the case of a 69-year-old pro-Israel protester who died after an altercation with a pro-Palestinian demonstrator in Southern California earlier this month, the authorities said. The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department said that Loay Alnaji, 50, was arrested in Moorpark, Calif., and was being held on suspicion of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the death of the protester, Paul Kessler. Mr. Alnaji’s bail was to be set at $1 million, the sheriff’s office said in a statement announcing the arrest. The Ventura County district attorney’s office was still reviewing the evidence Thursday morning and said that it expected to determine the exact charges against Mr. Alnaji later in the day.

(AP) — Days after asking for the public’s help to determine what happened at a California protest that resulted in a Jewish demonstrator’s death, authorities said Thursday they still have no video of the incident and are urging patience as they investigate. Paul Kessler, 69, died early Monday at a hospital following a Sunday confrontation with a pro-Palestinian demonstrator over the Israel-Hamas war in Thousand Oaks, a suburb northwest of Los Angeles. Sheriff Jim Fryhoff said Tuesday that deputies determined Kessler had fallen backward and struck his head on the ground. The pro-Palestinian demonstrator stayed at the scene and told deputies he had called 911, Fryhoff said. Demonstrations have been widespread and tensions are escalating in the United States as the death toll rises in the Israel-Hamas war.

CNN —Officials were called to the southern California home of Britney Spears on Wednesday to conduct a wellness check after the singer posted a video on social media depicting her dancing with knives. Someone close to Spears called authorities “genuinely concerned about her wellbeing,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Office Captain Dean Worthy told CNN. The sergeant arrived at the Spears home, Worthy said, and was contacted over an entrance intercom by a member of Spears’ security team. In January, Spears was the subject of another wellness check, when she said “prank phone calls” prompted police to visit her home. Jason Karol from the Ventura County Sheriff’s office confirmed that the department had “received some calls from concerned fans” after Spears deleted her Instagram account.

Light rain and snow showers lingered Tuesday in some areas across California, but the skies were finally largely clear. A shot of precipitation from a quick system was predicted for Wednesday or Thursday, followed by a dry period, the National Weather Service said. More than 70 residents were evacuated by helicopter, but a handful have refused to leave, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office. “We’ve had enough rain for now and a long time to come.”The amount of rain and snow across the state has been staggering. The San Francisco “water year” to date — since Oct. 1, 2022 — has recorded 21.75 inches of rain, making it the sixth-wettest water year on record, the National Weather Service said.
